Red Redford

Indentured

Recommended Posts

An incident in town had kept Red late at work. It wasn't until the end of the sixth inning, more than halfway through their oldest son's game, that he slid quietly into the bleachers beside his wife. His gear was absent, but Red was still wearing his uniform as he settled, taking a moment to scope out the score on the board. Their team was two points ahead, runners on first and third.

"He been on the mound yet?" Red asked his wife, seeing Seth playing his secondary position as short stop rather than pitching at the moment. So far that was where he'd been playing the whole of the game, the two senior pitchers on the team having roated through the first three innings. Before Violet could answer the pitcher wound up and threw. The batter nailed a leftward line drive that Seth snagged from the air, and with practiced fluidity he took the ball and hurled it to the catcher at home plate to intercept the steal. There was a brief run down between the catcher and third before a successful tag out that made three, leaving their son's team trotting in to their dugout to get ready to go to bat while the other team took the field.

Down in the front rows of the bleachers a collection of their son's friends and cousins broke out into cheers.

Once the cheers died down Violet nudged into Red and shook her head. "Not yet," she shook her head glancing down to Alice who seemed to be staring at Seth harder than normal and he kept glancing to her. "He's doing great though," she said.

Red nodded once and settled to watch the rest of the game. The home team had been about halfway through their batting roster on the last inning, so Seth was milling in the dugout. After a few minutes Alice had approached and they were bullshitting back and forth through the mesh barrier.

"They sure have gotten buddy buddy lately," Red observed to his wife.

Whatever exchange the kids were having was cut off by the couch. Seth drifted to take a seat on the bench and focus on the game. The start of the inning was rather uneventful, team being on its weaker hitters. Two players made it on base, but no runs were driven in leaving them clutching at a narrow lead.

The third down was a strike out and the players exchanged places on the field. It was after the opposing team drove in a run and left players on 2nd and 3rd with no outs that the coach called a time out and pulled the current pitcher off, putting Seth on the mound to clean up.

For the moment Red forgot about the concerning interacrions with Alice as the game became more intense. Seth shut down the inning with two strike outs and a pop fly that was easily caught in right field.

During the next round at bat Seth hit a triple that brought in two runners, and during the 9th he secured the team's win with a three up and down strike out.

It was only after all the commotion and post game ceremony that the concern would arise again when Alice was the first person Seth greeted upon his exit from the field - angling for her over both friends and parents.

Red and Violet both approached regardless, congratulating their son fpr his performance.

"He was fucking amazing right?" Alice said with a grin staying close to Seth despite knowing they were related they were always close. They didn't smell similar enough and that's part of why they were getting too close for comfort.

"He played a pretty damn good name," Red nodded in agreement.

"Can one of you take my gear home? We were gonna go out with the guys a while," Seth spoke up deapite it being nearly ten already.

Red shook his head, "Not tonight," he answered, not backing down when Seth immediately protested, "It's Wednesday and you've got that exam, remember? You're gonna end up benched if you don't pull that grade up," he elaborated - and that was a valid concern, though Red was mostly trying to drag the boy home rather than let him go roaming in search of trouble with Alice.

All the same, Seth still cast a pleadingm albiet brief, look at his mom.
